Long Island Area Council of Unitarian Universalist Congregations (LIAC) connects UUs across the Island through education, advocacy, service, and spirituality. The Long Island Conference was formed with representatives of congregations from Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens Counties in 1959. The Council was formally recognized in 1974 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Today, LIAC enables congregations to collaborate, share resources, and connect with other liberal religious minds and hearts beyond their home community. In 2024, the Board hired an Executive Director as a commitment to a thriving future. This is an exciting time to join LIAC as we identify ways to upscale the Council’s work and begin our first strategic planning process.
The Student Activity Fund (SAF), a LIAC-sponsored program funded by the UU Veatch Program at Shelter Rock, is celebrating its 50th year of providing internship grants to students from Unitarian Universalist congregations on Long Island. The grants enable interns to work at self-selected nonprofits that encourage participants to live their religious values with a focus on social action, advocacy, social services, or environmental action. The SAF Program Director will work closely with the SAF Advisory Committee to ensure the program’s success.
Salary $1,500/month
Hours Average of 12 hours per week, with periods of greatest activity in the late spring and summer
Location Remote first, with occasional site visits and an in-person event
A person who will succeed in this role is able to see tasks and is not afraid to get to work. Due to the remote nature of the work, you will need to work independently without a lot of supervision. You will have experience working with youth/young adults and nonprofit organizations. To feel good about your work, you must align with our Unitarian Universalist values, especially the worth and dignity of all. You are someone who is able to show up with empathy and understanding. If you have a background in project management, program/business budgeting, and good communication skills, we want you!
SAF Program Director is a position for a highly organized candidate who brings excellent interpersonal and budgeting skills to the job. You are someone who is able to self-direct and communicate clearly with key stakeholders about your work.
This role is the point person for all things SAF related. You will:
To ensure historical documents, lists, and other materials are available for future program success, you will use the LIAC Google Workspace to:
Maintain up-to-date contact lists for SAF interns, organizations, and other program stakeholders
Collect and review intern applications, essays, and nonprofit service agreements
Help to maintain organizational structures and process within Google Workspace
Set up for events and create online registration forms
Write an annual grant proposal and report for the sponsoring UU Veatch Program at UU Congregation at Shelter Rock
Create and maintain an annual program budget
Work with LIAC Executive Director and bookkeeper to distribute grant payments
Keep clear records of grant distribution
This is a great opportunity for someone who likes to build lasting relationships and work collaboratively. You will:
Attend monthly SAF Advisory Committee meetings (remote)
Organize and present a hybrid (in-person and virtual) Orientation/Leadership Workshop for the student participants in May
Recruit student participants from Long Island UU congregations, including some site visits/presentations
